The Random Things You See: From Retail Breaks to Street-Corner Mascot Brawls

There’s a very specific kind of numbness that comes with working in retail. It’s a mix customer fatigue, the faint, haunting echo of horrible pop music playing on an endless loop, and the desperate need for fresh air.

That’s why the employee break is so important .

I was standing outside on a standard 15-minute break in front of the retail store I worked at, leaning against the brick wall, just watching cars go by. It was a typical Tuesday. Traffic was heavy along the main 8-lane street.

Enter The Easter Bunny

Out at the main street intersection, stationed in front of a newly opened local business, was a person dressed in a giant, oversized Easter-style bunny mascot outfit. Fuzzy white head, floppy ears, oversized paws, and a terrifyingly cheerful stitched smile.

The bunny was doing its jobdancing around and waving a neon sign to promote a brand-new hair salon that had just opened up in the strip mall. Drivers honked occasionally. Kids pointed. It was classic, harmless suburban marketing.

Until a pickup truck abruptly pulled over.

The Smackdown

I barely had time to register what was happening. A guy jumped out of the passenger side of the truck, locked eyes with the giant rabbit, and charged.

Before the bunny could even drop its promotional sign, the trucks passenger launched himself through the air and delivered a textbook, NFL-style football tackle straight into the midsection of the mascot.

The sheer absurdity of the impact echoed across the asphalt. The two of them hit the ground hard, rolling around and violently wrestling for a few chaotic seconds right there on the shoulder of a busy main street.

My brain completely short-circuited. I was holding a half-eaten candy bar, frozen in disbelief. Was this a setup? A strange marketing stunt for the hair salon? A localized turf war between rival stylists and local mascots?

As quickly as it started, it ended. The truck guy popped back up, brushed off his jeans, jogged back to his truck, hopped inside, and they sped off into traffic like nothing had ever happened. Just another errand checked off the to-do list.

The Aftermath

Left behind was the mascot. The giant bunny slowly picked itself up off the pavement, looking defeated and bewildered. Its once white fur was now streaked with dark asphalt dirt, dry grass, and leaves. Head slumped, the bruised and battered rabbit limped slowly across the parking lot, dragging its promotional sign behind it.

I never saw the mascot bunny promoting the hair salon again.

The Lesson of the Retail Trench

Retail gives you a front-row seat to humanity at its most unfiltered, bizarre, and utterly unpredictable. You can work behind a counter for years and think you’ve seen it all—until a pickup truck pulls over and proves you wrong.

Retail. The random things you see.
