The Longest Night Ever -Rough Draft

This might be one of the last times I tell this story, but I want to write a comedy screen play about it. I want to call it "The Longest Night Ever". It was the summer that I had just turned 21! I had moved out a year prior. That first year a way from home was an experience. All I did was work, usually 2 jobs at a time to make ends meet and I still had to get payday loans to survive. So that entire year I didn't go to many places except work and the mall.  On the 3rd of July my roommate John had a coworker named Phil that worked with him at Walmart on the overnight crew. Phil asked us did we want to go out to the night club on the 4th of July! My roommate and I both had never been to a night club before so we both said yes. The plan was meet up at our place after work that night and go downtown to go clubbing. The 4th of July came and I had a wild day at my job working in retail which by that time I despised. So I came home took a shower immediately like I always did. Tha...

The Ultimate 4th of July Chaos: My First Time Clubbing at 21

There is a universal rite of passage that comes with turning 21. For some, it’s a quiet dinner with a legal cocktail. For others, it’s diving headfirst into an absolute, unadulterated circus of bizarre events that defies all laws of logic and physics. My 21st summer was the latter. Having moved out into my first apartment a year prior, I thought I had a handle on adulting. Boy, was I wrong. What started as a simple invitation to celebrate the 4th of July snowballed into a 24-hour marathon of high-stakes drama, cartoonish side characters, violent bouncers, and a grand finale that felt straight out of a sitcom. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you mix first-time clubgoers, Walmart overnight stockers, runaway balconies, and a broken car axle, grab a seat. This is the story of the wildest Independence Day of my life. Act I: Independence Day Pre-Game (Or, How Not to Start a Holiday) It all started on July 3rd. My roommate, John, worked the overnight crew at Walmart alongside a guy ...

The Great 7th Grade Bike Disaster: A First Day of School Story We’ll Never Forget

We’ve all had rough first days of school. Maybe you forgot your locker combination, tripped in the cafeteria, or wore the wrong outfit. But unless your name is John, you probably didn’t have your brand-new bicycle literally disintegrate into a pile of scrap metal right in front of the entire student body on day one. I’m taking a trip down memory lane to share one of the funniest, most unbelievable middle school memories from the first day of the 7th grade.  A Shiny New Ride It was the early morning of the first day of the 7th grade. A kid named John who I had known from the previous school year came by my house so we could walk to school together. At least, I thought we were walking. John lived about five blocks away from my house, and my house was roughly three blocks away from the school. For the entirety of the 6th grade, our morning routine was simple, we walked. But this particular morning was different. John rolled up to my driveway riding a brand-new, gleaming bicycle. Appar...

What Living Beneath a Nightmare Taught Me About Grace and Patience

Disclaimer: I am not trying to be disrespectful to someone who has passed away, but this story is an authentic and crucial part of my personal journey. We’ve all had bad neighbors at some point in our lives. Maybe they play their music too loud on a Tuesday night, or perhaps they never pick up after their dog. But have you ever lived beneath someone you genuinely believed was an actual, breathing poltergeist? About two years ago, I lived in a condominium complex with an upstairs neighbor I was convinced had completely lost his mind. He was an older man in his early 70s, but his behavior defied logic, age, and basic human decency. Looking back on those three years of absolute chaos, I’ve realized that the experience wasn't just a test of my sanity—it was a masterclass in patience, boundaries, and unexpected personal growth. Here is the story of my time living beneath the neighborhood scarecrow. The Grand Entrance (Literally) The nightmare began almost immediately. The very first mon...

The Day Our Real-Life “Urkel” Got Knocked Into Next Week: A Middle School Memory

We all remember that one kid from middle school. You know the type. But my middle school experience was different. We didn't just have a kid who reminded us of a TV character; we had a kid who was convinced he was the real Steve Urkel from the '90s sitcom Family Matters. The students didn't give him the nickname. He gave it to himself. He dressed head-to-toe like Urkel, rocked the exact same high-water pants, cardigan, haircut, and thick-rimmed glasses. To top it all off, he actually looked like him. It was commitment to a bit on an entirely different level. Until, of course, reality came crashing down, literally through a set of double doors. This is the unforgettable story of the day our real-life Urkel got knocked straight into next week. The Setup: Enter Sam It was a normal day in class until Urkel decided to pick the absolute worst target for his comedic routines: a kid named Sam. Now, you might be wondering, what was a local drug dealer doing sitting in a middle schoo...

The Random Things You See: From Retail Breaks to Street-Corner Mascot Brawls

There’s a very specific kind of numbness that comes with working in retail. It’s a mix customer fatigue, the faint, haunting echo of horrible pop music playing on an endless loop, and the desperate need for fresh air. That’s why the employee break is so important . I was standing outside on a standard 15-minute break in front of the retail store I worked at, leaning against the brick wall, just watching cars go by. It was a typical Tuesday. Traffic was heavy along the main 8-lane street.  Enter The Easter Bunny  Out at the main street intersection, stationed in front of a newly opened local business, was a person dressed in a giant, oversized Easter-style bunny mascot outfit. Fuzzy white head, floppy ears, oversized paws, and a terrifyingly cheerful stitched smile. The bunny was doing its jobdancing around and waving a neon sign to promote a brand-new hair salon that had just opened up in the strip mall. Drivers honked occasionally. Kids pointed. It was classic, harmless subur...
